Who We Are and What We Do

Hands with Heart

Scotia Relief has been helping community members for over 90 years!

OUR HISTORY

Scotia Relief was formed during the great depression through a partnership between local law enforcement and area churches. The mission at that time was to provide local families and transients with food and shelter. At the point in 1950 that the ten area schools consolidated into the Scotia-Glenville Central School District, the focus changed to helping district families in need. With that new mission, administration of the organization was handled by school district administrators and nurses. Scotia Relief now provided holiday meals as well as assistance for necessities like rent and utilities for those who needed help.

SCOTIA RELIEF NOW

In 2013 Scotia Relief registered as a 501c(3) not-for-profit organization. Our governing board consists of four officers and eight board members. Our board members represent the Village of Scotia, Town of Glenville, the church community, public safety (police and fire), and local businesses. Our mission remains to provide holiday meals and year-round aid to residents. As such, Scotia Relief helps an average of over 60 families each year.

WHO WE HELP AND HOW

Any member of the Scotia-Glenville School District is eligible for consideration. Our program relies on referrals from community programs, public safety, churches, and schools.  Referrals are passed to our president who interviews the client to determine how we can best help. The aid we provide is monetary, either with prepaid cards or payments directly to landlords or service providers. Aside from the holiday meals, clients are limited to one instance of aid from us per year.

In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in self-referrals including individuals returning for assistance year after year. While we care deeply about every family who reaches out, Scotia Relief is not designed to serve as an ongoing or annual support program. To uphold our mission and continue serving the community effectively:

                            A. Assistance will now be offered only through referrals from schools, social service agencies, clergy,                                       health care providers, and community organizations.

                            B. Assistance will be provided on a one-time emergency basis, with additional requests reviewed only                                      when a referrer confirms a new or significant hardship.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Scotia Relief relies on donations from individuals, businesses, and civic organizations. Our board is completely volunteer, ensuring that every cent donated to our cause goes to someone in need. Donations can be mailed to our treasurer, Ron Schimpf, 824 Sanders Ave., Scotia, NY 12302. As a 501c(3), donations are tax deductible.
